Fabiano Looks to Defend His Title
The
IFL returns Friday at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J.
Topping the card, which airs live on HDNet (8:30 p.m. ET), are
title defenses by champions Jay Hieron (Pictures), Vladimir Matyushenko
(Pictures) and Waggney Fabiano. The undercard also features plenty
of title contenders taking on new IFL talent.
Wagnney
Fabiano (Pictures) (145.4) vs. Shad Lierley (Pictures) (145.8)
Lierley showcased
his skills last year when he took on Chris Horodecki (Pictures)
in a lightweight free-for-all that proved he could wrestle and
bang with the best of them. He went toe-to-toe in one of the best
fights of the year, proving that his heart and determination aren't
in question. Now he's moved down a class to take on the best featherweight
in the IFL.
Fabiano has
been more than solid since he joined the league, submitting everyone
he's faced. The good news for Lierley is that he should know there
won't be any surprises. Fabiano can submit anybody from any angle,
which makes pounding him out on the ground not an option. Stuffing
takedowns and counterpunching could be.
Unfortunately
for Lierley, he doesn't have much experience, and any plan for
Fabiano is easier said than executed.

Discusses Nova União's Year
Nova União
is one of the better mixed martial arts teams in the world. The
camp's fighters proved as much in 2007 with excellent performances
in Brazil and abroad.
"For sure we had
an amazing year," said Nova União leader Andre Pederneiras.
"We fought more than ever. We fought 61 times, won 50 and
lost 11. With this, we were 82 percent successful. We had much
success in 2006 but with few fights. With the number of fights
we did in 2007 and with our success, you must agree that we had
an amazing year."
Pederneiras explained
the main reasons behind his team's accomplishments, detailing
the structure he provides for his athletes.
"I think the structure
we offer to training in our gym helped a lot," he said. "We
have in our gym physical conditioning and recovering with physiotherapists
to solve any trouble the athletes may have. Plus the training
at the same facility. The union of our team is very great. Everybody
helps everybody; this is a fact that increases the level of our
team. And now with me as Shooto Brazil's director, I can help
more because I can put more of our athletes on the cards, and
this will let our athletes fight more and improve more."
In 2008 one
of Nova União's newest talents could get a UFC title shot.
Thales Leites dropped out of his February bout against Nathan
Marquardt due to a hand injury, but he remains on the road to
the title.
"We are hoping
for this," Pederneiras said. "We know the athlete needs
more to win than just to be well prepared -- anything can happen.
But we try to give him every tool we have to make him able to
fight for a chance to the title."
Another star,
Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro, is gradually returning to training.
He is recovering from eye surgery after his September loss to
Gesias Calvancante.
"Shaolin
is back to training, and now it is a matter of time to know when
the doctors will set him free to fight again," Pederneiras
explained. "This is in the doctors' hands. When they say
OK, Shaolin will be ready to fight in one month or two. We are
all depending on this doctor's release to avoid any complications
to his eye. We are working step by step and, when they release
him, just give us a date, and he will be ready."
Pederneiras
is also counting on more success from Wagnney Fabiano. The BJJ
black belt had a great year in the IFL, with five submissions
in five fights.
"Wagnney is now
a member of our main team, the highest level of our fighters,
such as Shaolin and Thales, among others," Pederneiras said.
"I don't know why he isn't in the rankings because a guy
with a performance like his should be in every ranking. He has
been working for a long time and only now he is known. For sure
he is one of the top fighters." |

Fabiano is the 145lb Champion
In
the newly created featherweight division, Wagnney Fabiano continued
to display his technical brilliance in the ground game with a
first-round submission of L.C. Davis. The methodical Fabiano controlled
the pace of the fight and patiently improved his position before
locking on the armbar late in the round.

| Long
road for Fabiano could lead to IFL featherweight title
Ask
Wagnney Fabiano how long he has been training in the martial arts
and it's hard to get a straight answer. That's because he doesn't
truly remember when it all started. His best guess puts the beginning
of his formal training at around three years old, though he admits
that in his family jiu-jitsu was as much of an ambience and an
attitude as it was a practice.
The way a child soaks up the language around him, Fabiano soaked
up jiu-jitsu. But back then, not even his family had any way of
knowing how good he'd become at it.
Almost 30-years-later Fabiano is now a rising
star in the world of MMA, having already made his name in jiu-jitsu
competitions. Internet highlight reels show him practically dancing
around opponents, dizzying them with his fluid technique and always
operating three or four steps ahead of them.
Seven years after making his first transition
into MMA, Fabiano has suffered only one defeat -- a decision loss
against veteran fighter Jeff Curran. He made his way from his
home in Brazil to Canada, which in turn led to him joining Carlos
Newton's Toronto-based IFL squad. In four fights with the league,
only one has gone out of the first round, and all have ended with
Fabiano locking in a submission.
But all that has seemingly only led him to this
one career-defining moment. On Dec. 29 in Uncasville, Conn. Fabiano
will get his shot at the newly-minted IFL featherweight championship
belt.
For the Brazilian, the IFL's decision to create
a featherweight division (145 lbs.) was a godsend. It's the natural
weight class for Fabiano -- the one has competed at for most of
his career -- and it means he'll no longer have to give up strength
and size against the bigger fighters in the lightweight class.
Wagnney Fabiano fights in the IFL World Grand Prix final on Dec.
29. (IFL)
What he will have to worry about is his opponent in the finals
of the IFL World Grand Prix, L.C. Davis. A wrestler turned MMA
fighter, Davis isn't likely to be surprised by the deftness of
Fabiano's ground game, especially not after seeing it in action
against so many adept fighters.
Fabiano says he expects Davis to come in with
a plan to stop him from enforcing his usual routine, but he simply
chalks that up to part of the game.
"I know he will be strong and in good shape,"
said Fabiano. "And I know that there are still places where
I am weak. But that's what I do, is work on those places to make
them as strong as the rest, so that there is nowhere I am vulnerable."
One such example of this is Fabiano's improved
wrestling, which even Davis, himself a former college wrestler,
praised the Brazilian for. Fabiano said making the move to Canada
helped him in that department, giving him the opportunity to learn
from some of the country's world champion wrestlers.
While neither one of them is saying it, this championship
match is almost certain to be settled on the mat. Fabiano's ability
to force opponents to fight his game is well-proven, and even
Davis acknowledged that while he'd like to sprawl and brawl his
way to victory, at some point he may find himself on the mat.
For Fabiano, it has been a long road leading to
this point. As each match gains in importance for his career,
so too does his nervousness and anticipation, he admits. But with
almost three decades of training under his belt, he says his confidence
in his own abilities is the trump card he carries with him into
each bout.
"I've worked very hard, but I don't even
deserve everything that I have," said Fabiano. "I've
been very lucky to have the people around me to help me through
everything. Now I don't want to let anyone down."

Win Pro Debut at Legacy Fighting Championship
On
Saturday November 24th Janz Stein stepped back into the Cage at
Legacy Fighting Championship in Calgary Alberta. The last time
we seen Janz was last February when he took on the very experienced
Tim Tamaki.
On Saturday, Janz was
very excited to take on the game Dayton Fisher from Edmonton Alberta.
Dayton’s wrestling background did not show as Janz was able
to take him down repeatedly through out the three rounds controlling
the fight from start to finish.
Janz has now
improved his fight record to 2-2-0.

Camp Report
Wagney
Fabiano moved on to the finals of the first ever International
Fight League Grand Prix this past weekend with a submission victory
over John Gunderson. He will face undefeated Chris Horodecki on
Dec. 29 to determine the IFL’s first lightweight champion.
“LOURO”
READY FOR HIS WEC DEBUT
Marcos “Louro”
Galvao makes his World Extreme Cagefighting debut on Dec. 12 against
Hardcore Gym’s Brian Bowles.
The Shooto
veteran holds wins over Kenji Osawa and Fredson Paixao and looks
to establish himself as one of the top 135-pound fighters in the
world.
"This
is a great opportunity in my life and I have been looking forward
to fighting in the U.S. Now I have my opportunity and I will give
it my best," expressed the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
under Andre Pederneiras.
Galvao
spent the majority of his career thus far fighting in Shooto.
Now that the Brazilian has signed with the WEC, will he ever return
to the organization where he started his career?
“I'll
only fight there [Shooto] if it is for the title and if the WEC
allows me to,” stated Galvao.
“I want
to fight and win the title. I've only fought tough guys in Shooto
and now I want to fight the toughest guys in the WEC. I want to
fight the best fighters in the world. I want to show people in
America what I do and win to show how Nova Uniao fighters are
the best in the world.”
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS FOR DANTAS
Marcos
Galvao’s departure from Shooto opened the doors for teammate
Eduardo Dantas.
"Since
Marcos is going to the WEC and will no longer be fighting in Shooto,
they needed a Brazilian to take his place,” said Dantas.
“Someone from Shooto called Andre Pederneiras and he gave
them my name and sent them my fights."
With only
three fights under his belt, the 18-year-old takes on 123-pound
Shooto champion Shinichi “BJ” Kojima at Shooto “Back
to our Roots 6.” The Rio de Janeiro resident will face the
biggest challenge of his short career.
"Training
is going well. I've got good stamina. I'm training three times
a day and am well prepared. I'm ready to explode for three rounds,"
said Dantas.
Coming off
of a win over Yasuhiro Akagi in July, Kojima moves up to 132-pounds
to take on the young Nova Uniao fighter. A victory for Dantas
would propel the Brazilian prospect up in the rankings and provide
him with instant name recognition.
"I think
he's a normal guy. He trades punches well and does a little of
everything,” commented Dantas about his opponent. “I'm
not going to give him any respect. I'm gonna bang from the beginning
and try to end the fight in the first round.”
TWO UNDEFEATED TALENTS PANCRASE-BOUND
Marlon Sandro
and Hacran Dias put their unblemished records on the line when
they make their Pancrase debuts on Nov. 28.
Sandro faces
one of the biggest challenges of his career when he takes on Featherweight
King of Pancrase runner-up Daiki “DJ Taiki” Hata,
while Dias hopes to make a successful entry when he meets Eriya
Matsuda in 70-kilogram (154-pound) action.
“He’s
a tough opponent and he is good standing,” commented Sandro
about Hata. "He will have the fans there behind him, but
I've already fought on other opponents’ home turf and it
won’t be a problem. It is definitely the most important
fight of my career. God is giving me an opportunity that I have
been hoping for ever since I first started training."
MISCELLANEOUS NOVA UNIAO NOTES:
– Vitor
“Shaolin” Ribeiro is recovering from eye surgery to
correct an injury he sustained in his last fight against Gesias
“JZ” Calvancante. The former Shooto Champion hopes
to return to training soon.
– Thales
Leites continues to train as he waits for a call from the Ultimate
Fighting Championship. UFC president Dana White has named Leites
as a possible opponent to contend for Anderson Silva’s 185-pound
title.
– Jose
Aldo has pulled out of his match against Yuji Hoshino on the Nov.
28 Pancrase Rising Tour show. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
dreamed of fighting in the U.S. and made the personal decision
not to sign a one-year contract that would have prevented him
from fighting outside of Pancrase.
–
Leandro “Batata” Silva looks to rebound from back-to-back
losses when he faces 2005 Shooto Cruiserweight Rookie of the Year
Masashi Yozen on the undercard of Shooto “Back to Our Roots
6.”
