Interview: Dallas Holtby on starting BJJ

Jiu Jitsu has challenged me in so many ways both physically and mentally. I have lost 50 pounds, I feel better than ever!

Tell us about yourself?

I am currently in my 4th year of my Education degree! I have 2 boys, Brayden (12) Carter (9) they both train at Complete MMA

How did you start training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

I was given a school assignment – it was the Personal Development Project for my Phys. Ed class. My goal for the semester was to step out of my comfort zone, so I decided for this assignment I would try something I have always wanted to try but always let my fears of the unknown get in the way. I was extremely nervous to start and had no clue what to expect. Looking back now, I had no idea what an impact Jiu Jitsu would have on my life.

How did you overcome any fears if any when you started training?

I was so nervous for my first class, – I was really out of shape, haven’t really ever participated in any sports and had no clue what Jiu Jitsu would be like as an adult. My first class was held in the lower level – I walked in and honestly just wanted to turn around…it was intimidating – but I was greeted at the door and welcomed in. Everyone was very helpful and each week that I showed up, the fears and doubts faded, I started feeling more confident and then suddenly I was hooked!

BJJ seems to be a male dominated sport. How do you feel training with men?

I was nervous to roll at all let alone roll with men. First of all, I thought, I am not strong enough, then there’s the personal space aspect of the sport. I was a little bit uncomfortable because I really didn’t know what I was doing. But Professor AJ Scales, the coaches and team members create an atmosphere that helps to ease the nerves. The thing I realized is, everybody had a first day, everybody starts at the same level so everyone, in my experience, has always been willing to help because they know the beginner feelings and we all love the sport and just want everyone to have a good experience.

What has been the highlight thus far of your training?

Jiu Jitsu has challenged me in so many ways both physically and mentally. I have lost 50 pounds, I feel better than ever, gained confidence in what I am capable of doing and became part of an awesome team making great friends along the way!

Any advice you would like to share with women that are interested in getting started in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

DO IT! You will NOT regret it! If there is just a small part of you that thinks you might like it, try it! I had so many hesitations when joining but it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made! I just love it! Jiu Jitsu is such a great outlet and everything I have learned has become a part of my day to day life –setting goals, building confidence, and living an overall healthier lifestyle. I will never regret the day I stepped out of my comfort zone and joined!

After 17 months of training Dallas was awarded her Blue Belt by Professor AJ Scales on January 9, 2019.
